Window Damage and Insurance Claims in Miami

Important: Windows and Doors Repair LLC does NOT provide insurance claim services or wind mitigation inspections. This article is for general education only. For inspections, contact a Florida-certified wind mitigation inspector. For claims, work with your insurance provider and licensed contractors.
Florida homeowners insurance is among the highest in the nation, and Miami-Dade faces some of the steepest premiums. After a storm, break-in, or accidental damage, homeowners need to understand what their policy covers and who handles what part of the process.
This article explains what we document as a repair provider, what we explicitly do not do, and how the typical insurance claim process works for window damage in Florida.
What We Document
When we assess window or door damage at your property, we provide thorough written documentation including: dated photos of the damage from multiple angles, a written description of the affected hardware or glass, the likely cause based on visible evidence, and a repair scope with cost estimate for repair-only work.
This documentation is yours to use with your insurance provider, public adjuster, or attorney. We do not send it directly to insurers — we provide it to you, the homeowner, so you control your claim process.
What We Do Not Do
We do not file insurance claims on your behalf. We do not negotiate with insurance adjusters. We do not provide legal advice or represent you in disputes. We do not perform wind mitigation inspections or issue OIR-B1-1802 forms. These services require licensed public adjusters, attorneys, or Florida-certified wind mitigation inspectors.
Our role is strictly repair and damage documentation. If your damage requires claim filing, negotiation, or legal representation, we will refer you to licensed professionals at no cost. We receive no referral fees or commissions from any professional we refer.
Typical Claim Process
The typical window damage claim process in Florida follows these steps: document the damage immediately with photos and notes, contact your insurance provider to report the claim within the timeframe specified in your policy, schedule an appointment with the insurance adjuster for inspection, obtain repair estimates from licensed contractors or repair providers, and submit documentation and estimates to your insurer for review.
The insurer will evaluate your claim based on your policy coverage, deductible, and cause of damage. Hurricane damage may be subject to a separate, higher deductible than non-hurricane claims. Review your policy declaration page to understand your specific deductibles.
Hurricane vs Non-Hurricane Deductibles
Florida homeowners policies typically have two deductible types: the standard 'all other perils' deductible for non-hurricane damage, usually $500 – $2,500, and the hurricane deductible for named-storm wind damage, typically 2% – 10% of dwelling coverage. A home insured for $400,000 with a 2% hurricane deductible faces an $8,000 out-of-pocket cost before insurance pays.
For many Miami homeowners, the hurricane deductible alone exceeds the cost of minor window repairs. This is why many smaller repairs are paid out-of-pocket rather than filed as claims, avoiding premium increases from claim history.
When to Hire a Public Adjuster
Hire a licensed public adjuster when: the damage is extensive and claim value exceeds $10,000, the insurance company disputes coverage or offers a low settlement, you do not have time to manage the claim process yourself, or multiple types of damage (roof, windows, interior) create complex documentation needs.
Public adjusters charge a percentage of the claim payout — typically 10% – 20% in Florida — and are regulated by the Florida Department of Financial Services. They work for you, not the insurance company. For minor repairs under your deductible, a public adjuster is usually not cost-effective.

Common Questions
Can repair providers issue wind mitigation forms?
No. Only Florida-certified wind mitigation inspectors can issue the OIR-B1-1802 form that insurers accept. Repair providers do not have this certification.
Does maintenance help with insurance discounts?
Indirectly. Well-maintained impact windows are more likely to pass inspection and retain their wind mitigation credit. Maintenance does not directly lower premiums but helps preserve existing discounts.
Who should I call for a wind mitigation inspection?
Search for Florida-certified wind mitigation inspectors in Miami-Dade. They are licensed separately from contractors and repair providers. The inspection costs $75–$150 typically and is valid for five years.
